Up-cycling some baby blankets

We have a lot of baby blankets! Every time you have a baby, blankets are the most popular gift to give. Now that I am starting to sort through my baby stuff and getting rid of ALL of the little girl things blankets are definitely on the hit list. Some are almost too cute to donate/part with though so I have decided to up-cycle them from blankets into t-shirts for Kaiya. We have been a little low on clothes for the girls lately, especially Kaiya and t-shirts. She has a million long sleeve shirts from the fall and winter, but only 2 or 3 summer shirts. So I am putting m sewing skills to the test, I hope they don't look too much like jammies.

Finished product. Not too shabby if I say so myself. Kaiya really liked it, especially because it was just for her, not Elodie, and she got to help a little. The next step is tank tops.

A much needed face lift.

Alright Zombie lovers! I know that I have been a little absent. All for a good reason, promise. I have not been sitting around picking my butt the whole time, I have actually been very busy. One thing that I have been up to is refinishing some furniture. We have been thinking of listing our home and all I could think of was "oh dear god, people are going to see our ugly bedroom furniture". It really was hideous! I have owned it since I was in junior high and it has developed large stains, dints and even burns. Our master bedroom was by far the ugliest room in our home. There was no way we could show it without a new bedroom set, so I decided to repaint it (who has the money for new furniture now a days?!). It was a large task to take on, one that is not quite finished but damn close enough to show off photos. Here are the before and afters:

BEFORE

AFTER

I sanded the whole set, filled in the holes from the previous hardware with wood filler (since the new stuff is slightly smaller). Painted the whole thing white, I think this set was originally white, but over the years began to take on an ugly ivory look. Painted the top black and spray painted the brass hardware black. It took about 2 weeks in total since we could only work on it for 1-2 hours at night after the kids had gone to bed and it took the black paint 4 hours to dry. It was well worth it.

You want me to make what?!

A Nipple, oh so fun! So far my favorite commission to date. I was asked by a friend to crochet a nipple for her. All her mother in law wanted for Christmas was one to go with her new boob that she received due to her battle with beast cancer.

A hat to call my own

Since it has been so dreadfully cold here I thought that I would treat myself to a new crocheted toque. This is what I came up with, what do you think? PS: the beardaclava (toque with a beard for Blair) is still a work in progress.

Sew Buttons

Or bibs I guess. We have been low on the bib supply for some time since Kaiya is such a drool monkey she needs one on every waking minute and the super absorbant ones are hard to come by for less than $15, so I made some. Here is one I made for my girlfriend and her little guy. Kaiya has 2 like this with Flowers and Hearts on them. I thought they turned out rather well.
I used the template from the awesome Chickpea Sewing Studio.

I survived day 1

And here is what I did today:

Since Kaiya has such a little head it's hard for us to find a hat that fits her so I decided to make her one.

Blanket for Kalen

One of the things I had done for Megan at her baby shower, was have everyone sign a square of fabric for me to take home and make into a quilt. Well as luck would have it, the fabric markers I had bought that claimed to not wash off of fabrics. washed off of my little squares after I was done sewing everything together. I was so disappointed to say the least, but I still think the blanket turned out pretty nice.

A blanket to call ones own

Kaiya finally has a blanket that her Mommy has made exclusively for her. Her old blanket ( and much more special to her heart) was a 1/4 crocheted baby blanket that I found at my Grandmothers house when she passed away. I took it and finished it and when I became pregnant I brought it to my Mom to have her place a little somethig of her own on it. So long story short Kaiya has a blanky that as made by 3 generations of women and one day I hope she will add something of her own to it and make it 4.

Where the Wild Things are Costume

I finally finished the Halloween costume that I started months ago for my brother. This is the costume that I am saying put me in labor. I was cutting and pinning all day and that night we were heading to the hospital to welcome our baby girl. I think it turned out well for having to work on it while tending to a newborn.

Sew Buttons!

I have been doing a little bit of crafty things since I have been done getting Baby's room ready. First I finally finished my crocheted blanket for my girlfriend next door (she is due on Oct.26 with a little boy) and I finished the blanket I was sewing for Baby. It was quite the feat since I had no idea how to make it, seemed simple enough but when I put on the backing and tried to overlap it so that it was also the border I ended up scratching my head for a day or two. But I got it done and I think it turned out beautifully.
It is made out of the scraps left over from the bumper we received with the bedding set.

First Felted Elephant

So I have decided to attack a new hobby, needle felting. When I was attending Art College I was majoring in fiber and jewellery working so I learnt a lot about felting, but wet felting not needle felting. Well I have discovered a whole new world with needle felting. This is my very first attempt at making anything. I love it! I think it is adorable, but it is very messy and my skills do need to be honed.
